One of the causes of lukewarmness in the Body of Christ is failure to eat the flesh and drink the blood of Jesus regularly. The Lord knew the confrontations His followers would face in the world and made provision for them to live long and healthy to fulfill destiny. One of the provisions He made before going to the cross was the institution of Holy Communion. Self-introspection is the scriptural way of consecration to the Lord. It helps in living a sanctified life.

The ordinance of Holy Communion was instituted by the Lord Jesus Christ the last night before His death. “Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Lk 22:15). Jesus instituted it to be observed by the militant church until the end of this age. It is an offering of great significance in Christian growth and maturity

Holy Communion is a double-edged sword. It must be taken worthily on regular basis. If you take it worthily you reap the benefits. If you take it unworthily it can cause weakness, weariness and premature death.

You must be born again

You cannot be a partaker of the table of the Lord and also be a partaker of the table of the devil.  All unbelievers feast at the devil’s table. You must have clear evidence that you have been translated from death to life before partaking in Holy Communion.

There must be no sin not confessed and forsaken

You must deal with unforgiveness before sharing in the communion table.

There must be solemnity in its celebration

Adequate preparation must be made beforehand. The emblems must be handled reverently especially after consecration. Adequate time must be allotted to praising or singing songs to the Lord, Bible reading and prayer.

Taking Holy Communion is not optional, but when taken unworthily it could be dangerous. Not taking it at all or doing so once or twice a year is a manifestation of faithlessness. If you do not take Holy Communion you are:

  • Disobeying an express command of Jesus in the Bible.

  • Unmindful of the Lord’s death and what it accomplished for you.

  • Not likely to be expecting the return of the Lord.

  • Counting the Blood of the New Testament of no consequence.

  • Likely to be afflicted with unknown infirmities.

  • Committing a sin unto physical death and may die prematurely.

  • Refusing to eat symbolically the only food that guarantees eternal life according to John 6:53.

  • You have failed to judge yourself thereby becoming a candidate for “fiery” judgment and indignation of the Lord.

  • Lack of regeneration. For a sinner to eat the consecrated emblems of the blood and body of Jesus Christ is to throw what is holy to the dogs.

  • Partaking with a known or unknown sin. A believer with a sin not confessed and forgiven is in the same position as a sinner until atonement is made through the blood of Jesus. This is a sin unto physical death. “For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep” (1 Cor 11:30).

  • Frivolously, which is failure to appreciate what the body and blood of Jesus stands for. Irreverence quenches the power of the Holy Spirit. The bread and wine used in Holy Communion represent His body and blood. Although they are emblems, they must not be trivialized. The emblems are not the physical blood and body of the Lord as some believe.

  • When conducted by an unbeliever. Holy Communion celebrated by a Priest who is not born again is an abomination. The celebration is similar to Baal worship and attracts the sword of the destroyer as happened at Baal Peor.

  • When taken merely to satisfy hunger or curiosity. The purpose of Holy Communion must always be the seven ‘offerings’ stated in part one of this blog.

Every raptured saint will be required to participate in the first Holy Communion service with the Lord Himself presiding as He did on earth the night before He was arrested. As a prophet King David had a glimpse of what will happen in the second heaven after the Judgment Seat that will determine the seating hierarchy.

For too long followers of Christ, especially those in the Pentecostal and Evangelical fold have neglected the sacrament of Holy Communion. In the early church it was not so. “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” (Acts 2:41-42)

One of the landmarks of the original Apostles’ doctrine and fellowship was the daily ministration of Holy Communion to those who accepted the gospel message, were born again and added to the church. “So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart.” (Acts 2:46)

This end-time church needs to go back to the fundamentals of the doctrine of Christ. Time is of the essence. The return of the Lord is drawing nearer and nearer.
