Encountering The Word Made Flesh

Like Saul on Damascus road, you must encounter the Lord Jesus Christ in this life or perish. This is because all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me” (Ps 51:5). What King David said is applicable to all. God is not bothered about the number of people returning to “hell beneath” (Prov 15:24) from where they came to the surface of the earth.

God mourned the loss of His created human beings in the Garden of Eden. “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked … Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, ‘Where are you?’” (Gen 3:6-9). God in mercy promised to send Seed of the woman to redeem fallen mankind. The promise was fulfilled more than two thousand years ago in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ “who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead” (The Apostles Creed}”.

God’s present activity on earth is that everybody has a chance of hearing the gospel message. What happens thereafter depends on man, not God. A free-will acceptance of the sacrifice Jesus made on the Cross of Calvary is what matters. “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Some Christians will miss heaven because of their lack of love for the brethren. You cannot shun brethren on earth and expect to socialize with them in heaven. Living for eternity in God’s presence is like a four-legged race. You are not a winner until you have won all stages of the contest.

The abundant life Jesus brought from heaven to earth is not only for this life but for the hereafter. It means to be saved, enjoy the things that accompany salvation in time and enter heaven in grand style to dwell in the presence of the Lord forever. Since being born again is good but not always enough to guarantee entry into heaven, a Christian must therefore work out his or her salvation with fear and trembling through mind renewal with the Word of God.
